Struggles of Cultural and Neurodiverse Emergent Bilingual Students and Their Families

Colonnade BC

Cultural and neurological differences directly impact the academic and overall well-being of Emergent Bilingual (EB) students. A limited understanding of such differences impacts educators’ instructional efforts and limits EB students' academic and linguistic progress. Best educational practices have a limited impact on EB students' linguistic and academic progress when their needs are not understood. The inability to meet the needs of cultural and neurodiverse EB students negatively impacts their socio-emotional well-being and behavior. Increasing an understanding of the needs of cultural and neurodiverse EB students and their families will support their educational, linguistic, and socio-emotional well-being and overall academic success. This session aims to increase understanding of the unique barriers that Emergent Bilingual (EB) students with disabilities and their families encounter during the process of pre-identification, assessment, and following support. Educators will be able to identify barriers in their school environment and learn strategies to support the academic and socio-emotional needs of EB students and their families.

Is your CNA Missing 50%

Conference Center B

Let’s face it. Leading schools is hard work! Culture changes, mental health challenges, safety concerns, artificial intelligence, and teachers resigning in record numbers have forever altered the fabric of education. How do leaders stay positive and forge on? The design asks for strengths and problems, but most CNAs focus on the negative 50%. This session shows you how to include the positive 50% - the power of including assets in the needs assessment. Examine how identifying schools’ assets and strengths increases partnerships, engagement, and growth. Provide encouragement and hope for weary educators and students. Instead of operating solely from a deficit mindset - through root causes and problems - bring in the other 50% by including what is GOOD in schools. Eliminate those root causes and problems assisted by the power of assets and opportunities.

Empowering Generations & Safeguarding Futures: Navigating the Challenges of Child Online Exploitation and Self-Generated Content in the Digital Era

One of the most challenging aspects of child online exploitation is when these crimes involve self-generated content. At the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children we see reports that include this type of content depicting children of all ages. This workshop will include an interactive discussion to better understand these behaviors in children and adolescents using a developmental perspective. We will then discuss how to apply trauma-informed approach to tailoring prevention messages to specific age groups about self-generated imagery. Shaping Future Ready Students through Career Planning

Grand Ballroom FG

Many secondary students become so wrapped up in the here and now that they do not plan for the future after high school. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines career readiness as “the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace” (2014). However, this must start earlier than college. Many students need to be career-ready upon high school graduation if they are pursuing careers that do not require a college degree. In order to help these students know what is needed in their career path, students should develop a career goal and a plan for achieving it. Once a goal and plan are developed, career exploration can take place through high school graduation plans and CTE courses. This session will provide participants with information on career readiness as it pertains to our students.

Make Your 50 Year Mark: An Immersive Workshop on Leaving a Profound Impact

Conference Center A

Educators play a crucial role in shaping the future of children by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will help them succeed in life. However, children come from diverse backgrounds and have varied needs, which can create barriers to learning and development. These barriers could come in various forms including socioeconomic status, family dynamics, mental health, and physical health, to name a few. To remove these barriers and leave an everlasting legacy, educators must take risks on kids. Taking risks on kids shows them that they are valued and capable of achieving great things. It helps build their self-esteem and confidence, which are essential for success in school and beyond. By removing barriers and providing opportunities for all children to succeed, educators can leave an everlasting legacy that will impact generations to come. Through interactive discussions and activities, we will provide strategies for overcoming these obstacles and empower students to embrace their unique abilities and strengths. By the end of the session, educators will have a deeper understanding of the importance of leaving a legacy and the tools necessary to create a positive long-lasting legacy.

Celebrate the Building of Community Partnerships to Serve Your McKinney-Vento Population

Sam Houston

In 2006, New Braunfels ISD started its Homeless Coalition for Comal County with three founding agencies. Today, more than 50 partners meet monthly and work to serve the needs of the homeless community along with the support of Maria's Closet, a free to the public, 100% community funded resource for clothing, hygiene, and school supplies for all the entire family. Discover ways to build such partnerships in your own community, while taking away the stigma related to being"homeless". New Braunfels ISD's SAFE-T (Students and Families Experiencing Transition) program is built on a strong training model for all stakeholders, partnerships, and support for students and their families. The NBISD SAFE-T program team will discuss how it has built this Homeless Coalition, marketing for the program for training and fundraising, and its support system for its homeless population. Sample welcome packets, fliers, intake forms, and informational postcards given to staff and community will be shared.
